FlightStats Releases October 2012 Airline/Airport On-time Performance Report

Due to Hurricane Sandy North American airlines and airports experienced major flight disruptions and cancellations in North America

FlightStats, Inc., the leader in global flight and airport information services, has released October’s Airline and Airport On-time Performance Report. The report covers airlines and airports from North America, Europe and Asia.

North American airlines, on average, delivered 75.57% of their flights to the arrival gate within 15 minutes of schedule in October, down 4.93 percentage points from September’s 80.50%. This decline is due to the major flight disruptions of airline operations from October 27th through October 31 caused by Hurricane Sandy*. Cancellations for the group in October were up sharply: 25,921 cancelled flights compared to 7,985 in September 2012. *See recap for more details about the Impact of Hurricane Sandy on North American air travel.

North America’s top 10 performing airlines and their on-time arrival percentages in October were:

    1. HA Hawaiian Airlines- 93.85%
    2. QX Horizon Air – 91.57%
    3. CM Copa Airlines – 91.09%
    4. US Taca Airlines – 90.64%
    5. FL Airtran Airways – 88.10%
    6. CP Compass Airlines – 87.70%
    7. YV Mesa Airlines- 87.52%
    8. AS Alaska Airlines – 86.82%
    9. DL Delta Air Lines – 86.50%
    10. US US Airways – 85.92%

Alaska Airlines and Delta led the majors in October. American Airlines performance improved by 9.15 percentage points from September.
Here’s how the North American major carriers on-time arrival percentages compared:

    1. AS Alaska Airlines – 86.82%
    2. DL Delta Air Lines – 86.50%
    3. US US Airways – 85.92%
    4. WN Southwest Airlines – 83.40%
    5. UA United Airlines – 79.41%
    6. B6 Jetblue- 78.83%
    7. AA American Airlines – 68.23%. (59.08% in September)
    8. AC Air Canada – 67.15%

Though five North American airports were in the top ten, Tokyo’s Haneda continues to outperform the rest of the world’s busiest airports while posting a 95.39% on-time departure performance in October. One other Asian airport, two European airports, and one Australian airport rounded out the top 10 in October. The average on-time departure performance among the top 30 airports in October was 73.68%, up from 73.44% in September 2012.

    1. HND Tokyo, JP – 95.39%
    2. CLT Charlotte, NC – 87.31%
    3. PHX Phoenix, AZ – 86.67%
    4. MCO Orlando, FL – 84.64%
    5. IAH Houston, TX – 83.75%
    6. ATL Atlanta, GA – 83.59%
    7. SYD Sydney, AU – 82.08%
    8. AMS Amsterdam, NL – 82.00%
    9. BKK Bangkok, TH – 81.65%
    10. MUC Munich, DE – 81.56%

SLC took the top spot for the third month in a row with a 89.51% on-time departure performance in October. The average on-time departure performance for the group in October was 81.62%, down only slightly from September’s 82.78%.

    1. SLC Salt Lake City, UT – 89.51%
    2. MSP Minneapolis, MN – 87.53%
    3. CLT Charlotte, NC – 87.31%
    4. SEA Seattle, WA – 87.30%
    5. PDX Portland, OR – 86.98%
    6. PHX Phoenix, AZ – 86.67%
    7. MEM Memphis, TN – 85.87%
    8. PIT Pittsburgh, PA – 85.84%
    9. DTW Detroit, MI – 85.50%
    10. YUL Montreal, QC, CA – 85.04%

A mix of major and regional European airlines turned in strong performances in October including Blue1, Aegean Airlines, Czech Airlines, Germanwings and Finnair. For the second month in a row all of the airlines in the top ten delivered > 90% of their flights to the gate on time in October. The average OTP for the group was 83.66% in October, down from 85.03% in September.

The top ten on-time arrival performers among European carriers were:

    1. KF Blue1 – 95.01%
    2. A3 Aegean Airlines – 94.83%
    3. OK CSA Czech Airlines – 93.13%
    4. 4U Germanwings – 92.42%
    5. AY Finnair – 91.08%
    6. DB Brit Air – 90.76%
    7. WA KLM Cityhopper – 90.72%
    8. YS Regional – 90.72%
    9. BT airBaltic – 90.65%
    10. ZN NAYSA – 90.55%

Of the top ten Asian airline on time performers, seven delivered >92% of their flights to the gate on time in September. The average on-time performance rating among the 38 Asian airlines we analyzed in October was 78.05%, up 5.46 percentage points from September’s 72.59%. This is the second month in a row with improvement. August’s average came in at 66.69%.

    7. 6E IndiGo Airlines – 92.06%
    8. NH ANA – All Nippon Airways – 90.56%
    9. TG Thai Airways – 88.90%
    10. NU Japan Transocean – 88.55%
