FlightStats Announces Airline Winners in the Second Annual On-time Performance Awards

JAL, Alaska Airlines, SAS, Hawaiian Airlines, Binter Canarias, and J-Air demonstrate leadership in on-time airline performance for 2010

FlightStats, a leading flight tracking and airport information service provided by Conducive Technology Corp., today announced the airlines that are winners in the FlightStats 2010 On-time Performance Service (OPS)Awards. The OPS awards recognize airlines around the world that deliver the highest percentage of flights to their arrival gates within 15 minutes of the scheduled arrival time.

“Every year, the FlightStats OPS Awards answers the question of which airlines are the best at getting passengers to their destination on time. To determine the winners, FlightStats examined flight status and arrival data for 2010 aggregated from global sources including civil aviation authorities, airlines, airports, and major airline reservation systems. Finalists in seven categories (up from five last year) were announced January 13.

“We feel it’s our responsibility to constantly expand the scope the OPS Awards to reflect the growth of our international audience, so this year we added two new categories: Arrival Performance among Regional European Airlines and Arrival Performance among Regional Asian Airlines. We are very appreciative that travelers and airlines around the world have come to trust the FlightStats brand.” Mr. Kennedy added.

Conducive Technology has been tracking airline on-time performance since 2004 and is uniquely qualified to present these awards as the leading provider of global airline status information.

Awards were presented for 2010 operational excellence in the following categories:

Arrival Performance among Major International Airlines Winner: Japan Airlines International (JAL)

JAL achieved a 2010 on-time performance record of 89.90%. For the category, the average on-time performance was 77.75% during this same period. This is the second year in a row JAL has won in this category which includes airlines that fly a significant number of trans-oceanic or international flights spanning at least three continents with at least 30,000 flights operated annually.

Arrival Performance among Major North American Airlines Winner: Alaska Airlines

Alaska Airlines achieved a 2010 on-time performance record of 87.36%. The average on-time performance was 79.18% for this category which includes airlines based in North America and operating at least 30,000 annual scheduled flights within North America.

Arrival Performance among Major European Airlines Winner: Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS)

SAS achieved a 2010 on-time performance record of 86.47%. The average on-time performance was 73.78% for this category which includes airlines based in Europe and operating at least 30,000 annual scheduled flights within Europe.

Arrival Performance among Major Asian Airlines Airlines Winner: Japan Airlines International (JAL)

JAL achieved a 2010 on-time performance record of 89.90%. The average on-time performance was 75.47% in this category which includes airlines based in Asia and operating at least 30,000 annual scheduled flights within Asia.

Arrival Performance among Regional North American Airlines Winner: Hawaiian Airlines

Hawaiian Airlines achieved a 2010 on-time performance record of 92.01%. The average on-time performance in 2010 was 79.48% for this category which is comprised of airlines based in North America with service concentrated in certain regions, states and provinces in North America and operating at least 20,000 scheduled flights annually. This is the second year in a row Hawaiian Airlines has won in this category.

Arrival Performance among Regional European Airlines Winner: Binter Canarias

Binter Canarias achieved a 2010 on-time performance record of 90.64%. The average on-time performance was 80.97% for this category which is comprised of airlines based in Europe with service concentrated in Europe and operating at least 20,000 scheduled flights annually.

Arrival Performance among Regional Asian Airlines Winner: J-Air

J-Air achieved a 2010 on-time performance record of 93.32%. The average on-time performance was 81.84% for this category which is comprised of airlines based in Asia with service concentrated in Asia and operating at least 20,000 scheduled flights annually.

Additional Selection Criteria:

  • Airline performance was determined based on on-time arrivals (arrived at the gate within 15 minutes of the published scheduled arrival).
  • Awards are based solely on performance results for flights operated by the airlines (no codeshares or regional subsidiary flights were considered).
  • Performance was assessed only for airlines where FlightStats could accurately determine the outcome of at least 50% of the airline’s flights.
  • Only scheduled passenger flights were included in the analysis (no charter, unscheduled or cargo flights were considered).
  • For the North American, European and Asian regional awards, only flights departing and arriving within the corresponding regions were included in the analysis.
  • For global airline and major airline awards, all flights operated by the airlines were evaluated.
